  1. I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of our valued customers and visitors for a great year in 2010. Nothing that we do here is possible without all of you. We are looking forward to an even better year in 2011. We will continue to distribute quality content through our blogs and articles that will give you valuable information. You can visit our blog that provides reviews of kids books here. Our other blog, which provides valuable content about a variety of different topics related to, but not limited to quality childrens books is a great source of information. To everyone, have a happy and safe holiday season. We will see you again in 2011.
  2. The holiday season is quickly approaching once again. This is the time of year where you hear your child say "I want that" about 100 times a day. The hot toy of the year, the toy they did not get last year or the one that their friends must have. You will be bombarded by ideas from your child. How many of these toys will your child play with after the first week after Christmas has past. If they are anything like my kids, may be one toy they will still play with. Then they resort back to playing with the toys that they already had. By getting them some kids books they can use time after time. Sure after a couple of days or a week they will forget all about the book. This is when you just file it away on the book shelf and after a few months pass they notice the book once again. What a great feeling it is to see your children entertaining themselves by reading.
  3. The holiday season is rapidly upon us. Do you have a plan as to what your children will read during this season? Do they read holiday books or continue with their regular schedule of reading. It is a great change of pace for them to read books for the holiday season. It gives them a break from their regular routine of reading and gives them the oppurtunity to read different types of kids books. They will enjoy the change and once the holiday season has past, they will be more motivated when they switch back to their regular routine of reading. Plus, it gives you as a parent the chance to share your favorite holiday books with your child.
  4. Do you have a child that struggles with comprehending what they read? Many kids have trouble remembering what they read. This is most true when they are just beginning to learn to read. It is just temporary so there is little need to be overly concerned. What happens is when they begin to read they are focusing only on reading the words and not comprehension. This causes their reading to be choppy like a robot would talk. The cure for this is to just keep practicing on their reading. With the practice their words will become more smooth and comprehension will soon follow. Take turns reading pages with your child. This will give them a good sense of how their reading should flow. Keep praising them for all their hard work and stick with it.
  5. Does your child read books that are at their reading level? If they are then you may need to rethink your strategy. They should be reading at three different levels on a consistant basis. Your child should read one book below their reading level. The purpose of this is to build their self-confidence and tone the skills that they already have. Then they should move to books at their reading level. This will help them in their development in becoming life-time readers. Next is reading books above their level. This will challenge them and give them a goal to work towards. While they will find it difficult to read, their minds need to be challenged periodically. Always give praise to your child for their hard work and effort.
  6. Now that school has been in session for a few weeks now, your children should be adjusting to being in school. The first couple of days the kids are scared and nervous. They have a new classroom, a new teacher and new kids in their class. After the first couple of weeks of school, they begin to adjust and get comfortable. They start to settle into their routines. They get use to the way that their teacher runs the classroom. The homework assignments begin to come home. Along with this comes the adapting phase for the teachers. They are getting to know their new students and after a couple of weeks have learned all the names of the students. Once everything has settled down, then it is time to get back to some serious learning. If after a couple of weeks of school it seems as though your child is not adapting, it is time to set up an appointment with the teacher or counselor to see how to make your child feel more comfortable so they can begin to learn. Remember to always tell your child that you love them and praise them daily.
  7. Grandparents Day is quickly approaching yet this year again. Have you begun to get ready for Grandparents Day? How do you even prepare for such a day. Well, I am sure that it has been a while since the grandparents have been in a school. There is so much that has changed since they have been in school. You should first make them aware of how your childs school operates so that there will be little confusion on this special day. Let them know who your childs teacher is, what your child is working on in their different classes and how to get to your childs classroom from the main entrance. Have your child prepare a special gift to give to their grandparents on this special day. It does not need to be anything fancy, a picture or a drawing will be much appreciated by your childs grandparents and your child will love to give them something that they created. Don't miss out on our back to school sale that will be ending in less than two weeks. These great deals are coming to an end.
  8. Are school lunches full of nutrition? Sure your childs school are not feeding them junk food, but is it what us parents would consider a healthy meal. Just because they offer a fruit or a vegetable does not make the meal healthy. You do not give your child full control of their lunch choices at home, so way do they have control at school. If my kid chose to, he could have chocolate milk every day at school. I sure would not let this happen at home. Since when did pizza become a healthy food. It is good and kids do love it, but healthy come on! I could go on and on, but I think that you get the idea. What are your children eating at school? Share your thoughts, comments and feedback. We welcome any and all responses.
  9. How has summer reading been for your child? It is important to keep reading during the summer months. A goal of 2 hours per week is sufficient to keep their minds developing. Your child should be able to choose the books that they want to read. That is because they will feel that they have input in their reading. It should be fun for them to read. Set aside a time when you can read while your child is reading. If a child sees their parents reading, they are more likely to emulate this. Do you have a child that is too young to read? Little ones should also be reading 2 hours per week or have books read to them. They will love the quiet time they get to spend with you. Have them describe what is happening in the pictures. Can they tell you what just happened on the page you just read. This exercise will help them develop their comprehension skills. We would like to hear how summer reading has been for you. Share your thoughts, comments and ideas.
  10. It can be a no win battle getting your child to read. This becomes more difficult during the summer months when they just want to relax and hang out with their friends. Do not show your frustration when your child becomes stubborn. They will feed off of your frustration and the situation will only become worse. Instead, relax and offer up incentives for them to read. An example of an incentive for your child could be having a friend stay the night or allow your child to stay out an extra hour if your towns curfew permits. These types of examples are especially useful if your child is a teenager. If your child is a bit younger letting them play for a little while longer or letting a friend stay over for longer periods of time gives them great incentive and motivation to read.
  11. Take a break from reading! Did I just actually say that? Yes, I guess I did. The fouth of July holiday is coming up. This is a great time to let your child take a short break, emphasis on short. Does that mean to just let your child sit around and do nothing for a few day? Certainly not! This gives you the opportunity to switch things up a little bit. Your child will enjoy the change of pace. After all, they deserve to have a little break. What should I have my child do if they are not reading you ask? An age appropiate workbook is super for a quick change of pace. You can find these practically anywhere. Even most drug stores and grocery stores carry them now. So give you child a well deserved break.

  12. Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors. Especially if you live in an area that actually has seasons. Those who live in places that have winter, welcome the outdoors as much as we welcome a juicy steak. During the summer months your child should still read, but it needs to be fun for them. They need to be able to enjoy the books they are reading. While some kids are harder to get motivated to read than others, for the most part once they sit down and start reading, they will enjoy it very much. Just a quick update on the comic book category of the website. It is nearing completion and will be launched to the public on Thursday, June 17, 2010. Come and checkout our great selections.
  13. Well, summer is now upon us and school has let out for the year. How much will your child read each week? Will your child read this summer or is it a time to rest the brain? We certainly don't want to rest, as this will cause your child lose what they learned during the school year. Your child needs to stay sharp by reading. You do not want your child to spend the beginning of the next school year catching up with the others who read in the summer. You don't need to go crazy on reading, but your child should a minimum of 20 minutes per day. That is only 2 hours per week. It is fine to take a day or 2 off during the week. Just be sure that taking days off does not become a habit. In conclusion, we would just like to give a quick update that we reported last week. The comic books category is still under construction, but should be completed by the end of the month. Stay tuned for more updates as they become pertanent.
  14. When the summer heats up, crank on the AC and read a good book. This is a great way to spend some quality time with your child. Your child will have a multitude of ideas as to what qualifies as a good book to them. Have your preschoolers sound out the letters and then put them together to make words. By doing this not only do they get to spend time with you, but also begin to learn to read in the same process.
  15. There are a high number of kids that suffer from low self esteem. There can be many reasons for this. We as parents can help combat this from happening to our children by praising them daily. Many families are so busy that they forget to praise the little things. They are only focused on the bigger accomplishments. Kids need to hear that they are doing good on a regular basis. Have you praised your child today? If not take a minute to do it right now!
